We are delighted to offer this exquisite antique solid silver card case made in the early Victorian period in Birmingham, 1839 with the maker's mark of Francis Clark. Clark was a specialist box/case maker renowned for ornate and intricate craftsmanship and this card case certainly lives up to such reputation with the most elaborate and profusely hand chased, engraved and pierced decoration. In spite of its piercings, the case has a good weight in hand, signifying the good gauge of silver used in the making. In addition to its quality, the embellishments are wonderful with a myriad of floral and foliate motifs covering both sides of the card case in impressive detailing and craftsmanship. imagining each section having to be pierced and hand chased may convey a tangible sense of how skilled each artisan must be in order to complete a single case without a slip of the hand. The front features a shield shaped cartouche with a bird crest and the lid presents a push button locking mechanism to keep contents secure. Understandably, its aesthetic beauty and magnificent craftsmanship would divert attention away from its use and practicality, however, we believe such a versatile and sleek style of these cases allows for multiple contemporary uses whether be it for carrying business cards, credit cards or some cash.
