About the Item

Displaying the understated elegance of hand-worked silver, this sterling silver mezuzah case combines a restrained modern form with the subtle irregularity and texture of traditional silversmithing. The elongated rectangular body is gently rounded at either end and fashioned with a softly convex face, creating a simple yet substantial architectural profile. The surface has been hand-hammered throughout, producing a delicate pattern of overlapping impressions that catches and reflects light differently across the silver. Rather than relying on elaborate ornamentation, the maker allows the texture and natural brilliance of the sterling silver to provide the principal decoration. The result is a piece with a distinctly handcrafted character, balancing simplicity with the visible evidence of the silversmith's workmanship. Applied prominently to the front is the Hebrew inscription שדי (Shaddai), traditionally associated with the mezuzah and understood as a name of God. The letters are also commonly interpreted as an acronym for Shomer Daltot Yisrael — “Guardian of the Doors of Israel.” Raised slightly above the hammered ground, the inscription creates a strong focal point while maintaining the case's restrained aesthetic. Rounded tabs at the upper and lower ends are each pierced for attachment to a doorpost. The reverse is fitted with an elongated opening through which the enclosed mezuzah parchment scroll can be seen. The reverse is stamped “STERLING” and the case is individually numbered 21/85, identifying it as an example from a limited edition of only 85 pieces.
