Masterfully crafted in the ancient art of repoussé, this exceptional mezuzah case was created in New York in 1994 by renowned Polish-American silversmith Henryk Winograd, one of the foremost twentieth-century masters of traditional repoussé silverwork. Executed in .999 pure silver, the piece exemplifies Winograd's distinctive ability to transform a sheet of precious metal into a richly sculptural work of Jewish ceremonial art. The elongated case is lavishly decorated across its entire face with an intricate composition of scrolling foliage, curling tendrils, and small clusters of raised berries, all worked in pronounced relief against a darkened and finely textured ground. The densely interwoven ornament creates an almost continuous field of movement, while the polished high points of the silver stand in dramatic contrast to the recessed areas, emphasizing the exceptional depth and crispness characteristic of Winograd's work. At the center is a prominent representation of the Tablets of the Ten Commandments, modeled in high relief and inscribed in Hebrew with abbreviated references to the commandments. The tablets emerge from the surrounding foliate ornament as the principal symbolic element of the composition, directly connecting the mezuzah with the giving of the Torah and the commandments it represents. The elaborate repoussé panel is framed at either end by smooth, highly polished geometric silver terminals. Their restrained surfaces provide a deliberate visual counterpoint to the dense ornamentation of the central field. Pointed mounting extensions with holes at the upper and lower ends allow the case to be affixed to a doorpost. The reverse reveals the long recessed compartment intended to accommodate the mezuzah parchment (klaf). It is hand-inscribed “H. Winograd 1994” and bears Winograd's characteristic mark, identifying both the artist and the year of execution. Born in Poland of Russian parentage and descended from a family of silversmiths traditionally associated with work for the Russian imperial court, Henryk Winograd was trained as a silversmith in Poland before immigrating to the United States in 1973. Settling in New York, he became the leading American practitioner of the historic technique of repoussé and established an international reputation for silver objects of extraordinary detail and sculptural depth. Winograd's technique involved painstakingly working sheets of silver into specially prepared forms and molds, using repeated hammering and hand-finishing to create sharply defined designs in high relief. Unlike many contemporary silversmiths, he strongly favored .999 fine silver rather than conventional .925 sterling, appreciating the purity and malleability of the metal for the demanding repoussé process. His works are characteristically signed, copyrighted, and marked to indicate their silver content, with HW999 associated with his pieces executed in 99.9% pure silver. His Judaica is particularly admired for combining the visual vocabulary of historic European Jewish silver with the technical precision of a twentieth-century master craftsman. Rather than merely reproducing earlier ceremonial forms, Winograd interpreted traditional motifs through exceptionally deep relief, intricate chasing, and dramatic contrasts of texture and finish.
