About the Item

A particularly well-preserved and remarkably well-provenanced bichrome ware jug with a geometric design, comprising red banding and concentric circles in black slip. The striking pattern is almost iconic of the early Archaic pottery production on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. Miniature jugs such as this were not merely functional objects, but are believed to have held important roles within Cypriot society. Frequently discovered in tombs and sanctuaries, they are thought to have served as votive or funerary offerings, symbolic representations of sustenance or ritual practice deposited there. Indeed, it is the reduced scale that suggests a ritual purpose rather than utilitarian one. Cf. Cypriot jug in the Royal Ontario Museum, acc. no. 965.114.64. Provenance With Pedros Kolokasides, Nicosia, Cyprus; Collection of Lotti Hohl, Switzerland, acquired from the above in 1962 (see old label, inv. 2991/K/1059/V) With Export Licence no. 4083 (dated 24th May 1962, item no. c.2991) from the Cypriot Department of Antiquities permitting export. Condition Exceptionally well preserved with original remarkably vibrant pigment and no overpainting. Age related wear and minor chips. Old collection tag attached. Please note that this item is a work of art and is thus exempt from US reciprocal tariffs.
