About the Item

A striking bichrome ware juglet with a geometric design and concentric circles in black and red slip, iconic of the early Bronze Age pottery production on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus. The simple banding and geometric design is typical of the Cypro-Arcaic period (circa 750-475 BC), and have become synonymous with early Cypriot artistic expression. Miniature jugs such as this were not merely functional objects, but are believed to have held important roles within Cypriot society. Frequently discovered in tombs and sanctuaries, they are thought to have served as votive or funerary offerings, symbolic representations of sustenance or ritual practice deposited there for the benefit of the deceased. Indeed, it is the reduced scale that suggests a ritual purpose rather than utilitarian one. Cf. Cypriot juglet in the Princeton University Art Museum, acc. no. 2023-243. Provenance With Pedros Kolokasides, Nicosia, Cyprus; Collection of Lotti Hohl, Switzerland, acquired from the above in 1962 (see old label, inv. 2434 K/1813/K) Condition With age related wear and weathering, otherwise in very good condition, with vibrant pigment and no restorations.
