About the Item

Early 19th-Century French Slipware Sgraffito Marriage Plate, Dated 1828 A charming and highly symbolic early 19th-century French slipware sgraffito marriage plate, decorated on a traditional yellow ground and dated 1828. Attributed to France, probably Sorrus. The plate depicts a joyous celebratory scene bordered with incised floral sprays or boutonnieres. At its center is a twin-handled urn filled with flowers, including a rose and a tulip-powerful symbols in floriography. The rose represents love, passion, and devotion, while the tulip signifies perfect or unconditional love and deep commitment. Above, nestled in the branches, are a pair of tourtereaux or lovebirds, emblematic of lifelong partnership, fidelity, and tenderness, inspired by their well-known bonding behaviors of pairing, preening, and affection. Rich in romantic symbolism and folk artistry, this plate is a beautiful and evocative example of early 19th-century French marriage ceramics and would make a compelling addition to any collection of folk art, slipware, or historic matrimonial objects.
