About the Item

A beautifully designed, large, hand-crafted Hopi-Tewa Pueblo/Hopi First Mesa pottery bowl by famed Native American potter/artist Elva Nampeyo (1926–1985) (also known as Elva Tewaguna), daughter of Fannie Nampeyo. Elva Nampeyo was born 1926 in the Hopi-Tewa Corn Clan atop Hopi First Mesa, Arizona. Her parents were Fannie Nampeyo and Vinton Polacca. Her grandmother Nampeyo of Hano had led a revival of ancient traditional pottery and established a family tradition of pottery making. As a child Elva would watch her grandmother make pottery and later her mother taught Elva and her siblings the craft of pottery making. Elva would become an expert at decorating and painting pottery herself and today her pieces are quite coveted by collectors. Her work can be found in various museums and private collections including the Morgan Collection of Southwest Pottery and the Lowell Holmes Museum of Anthropology in Wichita. The work is signed by Nampeyo on the underside/base. A special, unique, and rare larger work. Would be a great addition to any Nampeyo or Native American Hopi pottery/ceramics collection or make for an eye catching stand alone accent piece in about any setting.
