About the Item

This exquisite Pueblo ceramic jar (olla) by renowned Hopi-Tewa potter Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo is a masterful example of traditional Southwestern pottery. Handcrafted and signed by the artist, the jar measures 5 ¼ inches tall and 10 ¼ inches in diameter, showcasing authentic craftsmanship and cultural heritage. Using a traditional yucca-tip brush, Nampeyo meticulously painted the jar with intricate polychrome designs in rich red and black slip glazes. The piece was expertly pit-fired and burnished to achieve a warm, golden brown finish that highlights the natural beauty of the clay and artistry. Priscilla Namingha Nampeyo, also known by her Hopi name Own-ya-kwa-vi (“Display of Clouds”), comes from a legendary lineage of Pueblo potters. Taught by her mother Rachel Namingha and her great-grandmother, the famed Nampeyo of Hano (1858–1942), she continues this treasured tradition, creating timeless works that honor the Hopi and Tewa cultural legacy.
