Exceptional museum-quality blackware jar by Maria Martinez (1887–1980), San Ildefonso Pueblo, dating to circa 1925–1943. A refined example of the iconic black-on-black pottery for which Martinez became internationally celebrated, this hand-coiled vessel combines a beautifully proportioned form with an elegant feather motif encircling the body. The jar features Maria Martinez’s signature contrast of highly polished black surfaces and matte painted decoration. The deeply burnished exterior has a luminous, almost reflective quality, allowing the understated feather design to emerge with remarkable clarity. This sophisticated interplay of matte and polished surfaces gives the vessel a sculptural presence and demonstrates the exceptional control required in Martinez’s traditional pottery technique. The feather motif adds both visual movement and symbolic depth, while the restrained silhouette allows the craftsmanship and surface treatment to remain the focus. Measuring only 4½ inches high by 6¾ inches in diameter, the vessel has an intimate scale that makes it especially effective for display on a shelf, pedestal, or within a curated collection of Native American art. Maria Martinez was one of the most influential Pueblo potters of the 20th century.
