Bold and graphic, this late 19th-century red & white Rocky Glen Quilt is striking and composed of repeating red-and-white triangular blocks framed by a four-sided miniature triangle-sawtooth sashing and a scalloped border on three sides with a straight-across border on the top. The precision required to piece all of these tiny sawtooth elements by hand is extraordinary and would have taken many, many hours and days.
The color palette includes vibrant chrome red fabric with white polka dots against a soft white ground with light pink polka dots. The hand quilting is in diagonals and outlines of the patchwork and - along the scalloped border - in finely executed waves.
The back is white cotton with pink polka dots as is the binding that has been turned to the front and handstitched. The cotton batting is very lightweight.
