Kuba Palm Wine Cup – DR Congo, Early to Mid 20th Century Height: 12 cm A finely hand-carved wooden palm wine cup from the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The vessel is richly decorated with deep geometric patterns, characteristic of Kuba artistry, echoing the intricate designs found in their renowned raffia textiles. The cup has a sturdy angular handle, also incised with traditional motifs, and shows a warm, well-aged patina from years of use. Signs of age, including a natural crack and wear at the base and handle, testify to its authenticity and history. Palm wine cups (mbwoongntey) were not merely utilitarian objects but important prestige items, often used by chiefs, elders, and dignitaries during communal gatherings and ceremonies. Their elaborate decoration symbolized wealth, status, and cultural identity.
