About the Item

French Art Deco Butterfly Pendant Chandelier by Choisy-le-Roi, France, 1920s An exceptional French Art Deco pendant chandelier produced by Choisy-le-Roi, near Paris, during the 1920s. This elegant lighting fixture features a superb thick molded opalescent glass shade decorated with a stylized butterfly motif, suspended from its original stamped brass mount. The design perfectly captures the refined balance between natural inspiration and geometric sophistication that characterizes the finest French decorative arts of the Art Deco period. The opalescent glass displays a rich luminosity and remarkable depth, creating a warm and atmospheric glow when illuminated. The butterfly decoration reflects the lingering influence of French Art Nouveau while embracing the cleaner lines and modern aesthetic that emerged during the 1920s. Combined with its original brass fixture, the chandelier presents a harmonious and highly decorative silhouette suitable for both period and contemporary interiors. Choisy-le-Roi occupies an important place in the history of French glassmaking. Founded in the early nineteenth century, the glassworks became renowned for technical innovation and artistic production. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the company developed a successful decorative glass division, benefiting from the expertise of artisans associated with some of the most influential French glassmaking traditions. Following its merger with the Cristallerie de Sèvres in 1932, Choisy-le-Roi became an important producer of molded decorative glass, working in the same artistic environment that fostered designers such as René Lalique, Edmond Etling, Jean Luce, and Pierre D’Avesn. Elegant, sculptural, and highly collectible, this chandelier is a fine example of French Art Deco lighting and an increasingly scarce survivor of the golden age of French decorative glass.
