About the Item

An exceptional pair of 1970s Murano glass wall sconces, beautifully exemplifying the highly textural "ice glass" (vetro a ghiaccio) techniques popular in Italian mid-century lighting design. Often referred to as "Winter" sconces, these fixtures are a masterclass in organic, brutalist-inspired craftsmanship, designed to bring a dramatic yet warm ambiance to any interior. As illustrated each sconce is composed of three thick, vertically aligned glass panels with irregular, organically sculpted edges. The true brilliance of these pieces lies in the glassmaking technique: the translucent glass features a dense, granular frosted frit applied in a gradient, heavily concentrated at the center and bottom to mimic the appearance of pristine, clinging snow or melting ice. When illuminated, the textural contrasts come to life. The dense "snow" diffuses the light into a warm, glowing ember, while the clear, icy edges refract the light, creating a stunning interplay of warmth and frost. The heavy glass shades are secured by minimalist, polished metal disc fasteners, which add a subtle modernist touch without detracting from the sculptural glass. The mounting hardware consists of a sturdy, white-painted metal framework. Each sconce is designed to hold three bulbs, ensuring an even and radiant distribution of light across the frosted panels. Murano, Italy, 1970s Lighting Requirements: Three standard candelabra-style bulbs per sconce (E14 sockets shown). The thick cast glass remains remarkably preserved, while the interior metal backplate shows minor, age-appropriate wear that does not affect the exterior presentation when mounted.
