About the Item

An exceptionally decorative French Art Deco twin-arm wall sconce dating to circa 1930, combining substantial sculptural bronze work with a pair of period French pâte-de-verre glass shades. The impressive architectural backplate is finely modelled in high relief, centred by a classical female bust beneath radiating sunburst ornament. Columns, scrolling foliage, drapery, floral motifs and a flaming finial create an elaborate composition influenced by French Neoclassical and Art Deco design. Two beautifully curved inverted swan-neck arms project from the lower section, terminating in richly decorated drip trays and galleries. The sconce retains vintage brass or bronze bayonet-fit bulb holders. Of particular note are the two French Vienne pâte-de-verre shades, dating to the early 1930s. Each hand-moulded and acid-etched shade has a warm mottled yellow body graduating to a rich cobalt-blue rim, creating a dramatic contrast against the aged gilt-bronze metalwork. One shade appears to retain the Vienne signature. At approximately 9 lb (4.1 kg), this is a substantial piece of decorative lighting with considerably more presence than a conventional wall sconce. The light has been wired and tested and is reported to be in full working order.
