About the Item

Hand-painted Italian majolica ceramic apothecary jar table lamp, circa 1870s–1880s, with a new deep golden mustard dupion silk drum shade — the cylindrical albarello base decorated in cobalt and ochre with a Baroque winged cartouche bearing the inscription CANTHOS and the date 1684. Newly wired for US use. International plug customization available at no charge. Height includes lampshade. Hand-crafted from a Renaissance Revival albarello — the cylindrical pharmacy vessel form used across Italian apothecaries from the medieval period onward — this example was produced in the late 19th century in the manner of 17th-century pharmacy ware and carries a pronounced craquelure glaze over an ivory ground. The decoration is confined to the front: a hand-painted cobalt and ochre winged cartouche featuring a Baroque figural head flanked by golden scroll elements, above a banner inscribed CANTHOS — most likely a reference to an ocular remedy — with the notation V:P and the date 1684 below, consistent with period references common to Italian pharmacy jar revival ware. Unsigned but consistent in quality and character with Italian majolica revival production of the 1870s–1880s, in the manner of workshops such as Cantagalli or Deruta, this lamp bridges classical medicinal traditions with the ornamental sensibilities of the late 19th century. There is glaze loss around the base foot, exposing the clay body beneath — consistent with age, and possibly original to the piece. The new drum shade in deep golden mustard dupion silk echoes the ochre scrollwork on the jar directly, its rich, textured weave adding depth and glow, casting a warm amber radiance that deepens the lamp's already rich palette. This refined piece appeals to wunderkammer and cabinet of curiosity enthusiasts, collectors of medical and pharmaceutical history, and to those decorating interiors rooted in history. About Amitābha Studio: Amitābha Studio is a design atelier dedicated to transforming historic ceramics into one-of-a-kind lighting objects. Each lamp is crafted with deep reverence for the original form, using non-invasive methods that preserve the integrity of every antique or vintage vase. We pair these bases with bespoke lampshades — often made from luxurious textiles such as vintage sari silks or fine European fabrics — and finish each piece with carefully selected cords, fittings, and handmade brass elements. Our work is guided by a commitment to sustainability, cultural heritage, and timeless design.
