About the Item

This elegant Porcelaine de Limoges table lamp, designed by Louis Drimmer, features a finely crafted blue-and-white porcelain body decorated with the celebrated Willow pattern, one of the most enduring and romantic motifs in ceramic history. The porcelain vessel is classically baluster-shaped, with a softly flaring neck and a luminous white glaze that highlights the delicacy of the hand-painted cobalt decoration. The lamp is mounted on a carved wooden base with a rich reddish-brown patina, providing a warm and sophisticated contrast to the crisp porcelain above. It retains its beautiful original lampshade holder, an increasingly rare and desirable detail that enhances both authenticity and visual appeal. Dimensions: – Height without lamp fitting: 42 cm – Height with lamp fitting: 56 cm – Height with lampshade: 88 cm – Diameter: 19 cm Model no 4680, Porcelaine de Limoges, L&D Porcelaines d'Art The Willow pattern adorning the porcelain depicts an idyllic, imagined landscape of pagodas, bridges, flowing water, and graceful trees, all arranged in balanced framed panels. Central to the design is the legendary story of two forbidden lovers, a narrative that has given the pattern its enduring emotional resonance. According to the legend, the lovers flee across a bridge to escape an arranged marriage, only to be tragically caught. Moved by their devotion, the gods transform the couple into two birds, allowing them to remain together for eternity. These birds, traditionally shown flying above the landscape, symbolize eternal love, freedom, and transcendence — a poetic detail that elevates the pattern beyond mere decoration. While inspired by Chinese visual themes, the Willow pattern was developed in Europe in the late 18th century and quickly became a favorite among leading porcelain workshops. In Limoges, France, renowned for producing some of the world’s finest porcelain, artisans adopted and refined the motif using superior materials and meticulous hand-painting techniques. Limoges porcelain is celebrated for its exceptional whiteness, translucency, and durability, made possible by the region’s natural kaolin deposits and centuries-old tradition of craftsmanship. Louis Drimmer, closely associated with high-quality Limoges porcelain, is known for elevating traditional forms through refined proportions and sophisticated decorative choices. Rather than referring to a single factory, Porcelaine de Limoges denotes both geographic origin and a recognized standard of excellence, encompassing numerous historic ateliers that produced decorative objects such as vases and lamp bodies for the luxury market. This Limoges Willow pattern lamp is a timeless decorative object, equally suited to classic, chinoiserie, or eclectic interiors, and stands as both a functional lighting piece and a work of porcelain art. LAMPSHADE The lampshade shown in the images is not included but may be available on request.
