About the Item

Hand-painted Italian majolica albarello apothecary jar table lamp, 19th-century Renaissance Revival, with new mustard dupion silk lampshade. The cream-ground jar is decorated in cobalt blue, ochre, and green with an animated herb-gathering scene and apothecary inscription. Newly wired for U.S. use. International plug customization available at no charge. Height includes lampshade. The inscription reads "L MENTHAE" — Latin for a mint preparation, most likely Liquor Menthae, a liquid extract of peppermint prescribed for indigestion, nervous complaints, and respiratory ailments. Mint was one of the most continuously used medicinal herbs in the Western pharmacopoeia, and a well-stocked apothecary would have kept several mint preparations on hand. The decoration painted directly on the tin-glazed cream ground depicts two lively figures on a green mound: a man in a wide-brimmed hat carrying a tall staff, and a woman with carrying a wicker basket, both in motion as if gathering herbs. Stylized plant forms — herbs and roots — flank the scene on either side. A yellow scroll banner below carries the inscription in dark lettering. The palette of cobalt blue, warm ochre, green, and cream gives the jar an immediacy and warmth that reads well as a lamp base. The albarello is a cylindrical pharmacy jar that served as the standard vessel of European apothecaries for five centuries. This example dates to circa 1870s–1880s, made during the Italian Renaissance Revival, when workshops in central and northern Italy reinterpreted earlier apothecary forms and iconography for collectors who valued classical learning and ornamental craft. The new custom mustard dupion silk drum lampshade was chosen to draw out the warm ochre and yellow tones of the decoration. About Deruta & the Italian Renaissance Revival Deruta, a hill town in Umbria, has been a center of majolica production since the 15th century, renowned for its tin-glazed earthenware and expressive hand-painted decoration. The 19th-century Renaissance Revival brought renewed demand for historically inspired pharmacy vessels across Umbria, Faenza, and Florence, as workshops returned to the albarello forms and apothecary iconography of earlier centuries. Artisans of this period drew on classical learning and medical history, reinterpreting Renaissance ornament for a new generation of collectors. The result was a body of ceramics that functions simultaneously as craft object, historical document, and symbol — bridging half a millennium of Italian ceramic tradition.
