An antique early 20th century terracotta olive jar from Turkey, hand-thrown and traditionally fired, now converted into a sculptural table lamp.
The form is clean and resolved — a broad, rounded shoulder sitting above a gently tapering base, with a short, defined neck that gives it structure. It’s a classic olive jar silhouette, but slightly tighter and more refined than most, which gives it a quiet strength rather than feeling oversized or heavy.
The surface is where this piece really holds attention. The clay has a dry, almost chalky finish, with a soft, matte quality that absorbs light rather than reflecting it. Horizontal throwing lines sit just beneath the surface, visible in bands across the body, grounding the piece in its hand-thrown origin.
There’s a natural build-up of darker speckling through the lower half — irregular, soot-like markings that have settled into the clay over time. These sit against the warmer terracotta base, creating a mottled, layered depth rather than a flat colour. Across the shoulder, faint pale streaks and tonal shifts move through the surface, likely from mineral deposits or long-term wear, adding another layer of variation.
Nothing is overly worked or decorative — it’s the combination of these small, incidental details that gives the piece its character. It feels honest, handled, and properly aged.
Originally used for storing olive oil or water, the vessel was made for daily use, and that history shows through in the surface rather than the form. The proportions remain composed and balanced, while the finish carries the story.
Now reworked as a vintage terracotta lamp, it brings a softer, more textural presence than darker or more heavily fired pieces. It works particularly well in interiors that lean into natural materials — linen, timber, plaster — where the surface can sit quietly but still hold depth.
Fitted with antique bronze hardware, the metalwork will continue to age naturally alongside the clay. Supplied with a 2m antique gold cable and UK plug, with EU or US conversion available on request.
