About the Item

This Murano glass vanity mirror by Barovier and Toso, produced in Italy in the 1940s, presents a refined example of mid-century Venetian glass craftsmanship. The substantial frame is formed from clear Murano glass, worked into a sculptural series of undulating ridges in the torchon manner, creating a sense of movement and depth around the reflective surface. The mirror is defined by its softly contoured, shield-like form, with a gilt-toned brass inner frame that outlines the glass and introduces a warm contrast to the cool clarity of the surrounding material. The thickness of the glass frame gives the piece a notable presence, while maintaining a balanced and controlled elegance typical of Barovier and Toso’s work of the period. Designed as a tabletop or vanity mirror, the piece is supported by a polished brass easel stand, allowing for adjustable positioning. The reverse is finished with a red-toned wooden back plate, adding both structural integrity and a considered visual finish. Signed with the impressed Barovier & Toso name to the brass back hinge. Condition is very good for its age and use. There is some oxidation and patination to the brass elements. The glass remains in very good condition with no chips or damage, and the wooden back plate is well preserved. Measurements: 48 cm height x 40 cm width x 6 cm depth (18.9 in x 15.7 in x 2.4 in).
