About the Item

First edition, first printing of this monograph on the collaborative domestic architectural work of Marcel Breuer and Herbert Beckhard, written by David Masello and published in 1993 by W.W. Norton & Company. 4to (9” x 10.25”), oatmeal cloth lettered in blue, pictorial dust jacket, 172 pages, extensively illustrated in black-and-white and color. Based upon interviews with Beckhard and many of the original clients, Masello examines twenty houses designed during the Breuer–Beckhard collaboration. Photographs, plans, elevations, and architectural drawings trace their experiments with asymmetrical composition, exposed structure, flowing interiors, natural materials, and the integration of house and landscape. Includes Beckhard’s recollections of working with Breuer and an afterword by Stanley Abercrombie. Author’s prepublication review copy sent to Herbert Muschamp, architecture critic of The New York Times, with Masello’s signed typescript letter dated November 1, 1993, and Norton’s two-page press release laid in. Writing more than a month before the announced publication date, Masello asks Muschamp to review or cite the book and emphasizes that no previous volume had been devoted to the houses. .A particularly appropriate association copy of an important study of Breuer and Beckhard’s domestic architecture.
