About the Item

Aboeng Jungle, Sumatra — Antique Photogravure by C.J. Kleingrothe c.1900 This original photogravure by renowned photographer C.J. Kleingrothe captures the wild, dense jungle landscape of Aboeng on the island of Sumatra around 1900. Kleingrothe became one of the most prominent photographers of the Dutch East Indies, especially recognized for documenting plantation culture, landscapes, and local people throughout North Sumatra. This dramatic composition depicts the thick, untouched tropical rainforest—fallen palms, dense foliage, towering trunks, and a narrow water path cutting through the wilderness. The image reflects both the beauty and the challenges of Sumatra’s interior during the colonial expansion of the plantation economy. Kleingrothe’s work has significant documentary value, preserving a visual record of natural environments that have since greatly changed. Printed using a high-quality photogravure process, the image has a rich sepia tone and fine detail. This is an authentic early printing, mounted on its original plate paper with printed English, Dutch, and German captions below. An impressive decorative piece and a historically important work for collectors of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, plantation history, travel photography, and colonial-era documentation. Condition: Very good antique condition. Light age toning and scattered foxing in margins. Image area clean and well-preserved. Wide original margins present. Ready for framing. Framing Suggestions: A dark wood or black frame with a warm ivory or natural white mat will highlight the deep tonal range of the photogravure and complement the vintage presentation. Technique: Photogravure Maker: C.J. Kleingrothe, Medan, Sumatra, c.1900
