19th-Century Russian Orthodox Crucifixion Icon with Extensive Church Slavonic Inscriptions A deeply atmospheric and finely detailed 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon depicting the Crucifixion of Christ, executed in the traditional Byzantine manner with extensive Church Slavonic inscriptions and an unusually decorative turquoise and gilt border evocative of cloisonné enamelwork. The icon presents Christ crucified upon a dark wooden cross, flanked by the mourning figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Theologian, all rendered with elongated proportions and solemn devotional expression characteristic of Russian icon painting of the period. The arched upper register bears the title “Распятие Господне” Translated: “The Crucifixion of the Lord.” The cross plaque is inscribed with “І.Н. Ц.І.” The Church Slavonic equivalent of INRI, translating to the following: “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.” Above Christ appears the sacred Christogram. “ІС ХС” Translated: “Jesus Christ.” Additional inscriptions include: “ЦРЬ СЛВЫ” Translated: “King of Glory.” and likely: “СЫН БОЖИЙ” Translated: “Son of God.” The Virgin is identified by the traditional Greek abbreviation "MR. ΘΥ.” Meaning: “Mother of God.” while Saint John is inscribed. “СТЫ ИОАНН БОГОСЛОВ” Translated: “Saint John the Theologian.” The richly ornamented border with geometric floral motifs provides exceptional decorative presence, uncommon among more austere provincial examples. The reverse retains an old typed collection or import label reading, “Russian Icon of the Crucifixion, 14 in. by 12 in., 19th Century," along with an apparent 1971 import or inventory date stamp, suggesting the work entered the United States through an early dealer, estate, or ecclesiastical collection. Presented on traditional joined wood panel construction with horizontal butons. Surface wear, craquelure, scattered paint losses, edge wear, and age-related abrasions are present throughout and should be viewed as consistent with the devotional use, age, and authenticity of the icon rather than defects. These surfaces contribute to the deeply timeworn spiritual character prized in antique Orthodox icons...

Henry Cooke, D.D., LL.D., President, Assembly’s College, Belfast. Re-Edited, with Considerable Additions by the Rev. J. L. Porter, D.D., LL.D., Professor of Biblical Criticism, Assembly’s College, Belfast. Illustrated by Historical Designs and Scenes from Bible Lands. London: The Gresham Publishing Company, circa 1880s. Large quarto, with original full leather carved and gilt tooled boards, all edges gilt, and metal clasps. Presented with a custom-made archival clamshell box with gilt tooling. Presented is a beautifully restored and exquisitely bound Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible. Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible was first published in 1778 in two volumes in Edinburgh. The Self-Interpreting Bible was Reverend Brown's most significant work and it remained in print well into the twentieth century. Although undated, this family bible was published by The Gresham Publishing Company, in London, circa 1880. Reverend John Brown (1722-1787) was a Scottish Minister of the Gospel at Haddington. He wrote numerous works on the bible, including The Dictionary of the Bible, A General History of the Christian Church, and Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible, as seen here. The design of the Self-Interpreting Bible, Brown explained in the original preface, was “to present the labours of the best commentators in a manner that might best comport with the ability and leisure of the poorer and labouring part of mankind, and especially to render the oracles of God their own interpreter.” Thus, the work contains a thorough history, chronology, geography, and summary, as well as explanatory notes and reflections, on the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments. As this was printed as a “self-interpreting” bible, many of these notes occur in the margins, next to the pertaining scripture. This bible is further elucidated by upwards of eight thousand explanatory and critical notes by the Reverend Henry Cooke, D.D., LL.D., a minister of the Presbyterian Church and President of Assembly’s College in Belfast. It was further edited and notated by Reverend J. L. Porter, D.D., LL.D., a Professor of Biblical Criticism at Assembly’s College in Belfast. A publisher’s advertisement for Brown’s Self-Interpreting Family Bible was printed in the January-July 1880 issue of The American Bookseller journal. The advertisement claims, “Brown’s Self-Interpreting Bible is widely and most favorably known on both sides of the Atlantic. It is pre-eminently A Family Bible, suitable alike for all the members of the household and particularly Helpful in explaining difficult passages, and admirably adapted to promote a Devotional spirit. Also, its unusually Clear Type makes it an excellent Book for Pulpit use...

Rare and good condition, Gothic-art shrine for standing or wall-hanging. This handsome and decorative, Gothic wall shrine is completely hand-crafted out of solid oak and it will look awesome, no matter where you decide to mount or place her. It must have taken its creator quite a few days to first draw this intricate design on paper and then hand carve the entire piece out of solid oak. The Gothic Style elements are deeply handcarved in both doors and they make this shrine highly decorative and an absolute joy to own and look at. This cabinet chapel (or chapel cabinet) comes with its brass lock in perfect working order and also with its original gothic style key. The handgrip is in fact a Gothic trefoil symbol (for the trinity). What also makes this piece extra attractive is the Gothic church window-like frame behind the doors. Graceful and all handcrafted antique light fixture. This early Arts & Crafts era pendant has an aesthetic beauty that you don't find anymore in this day and age. It has the most pleasing to the eye shape and amber color and the handcrafted brass has a marvelous patina. In images 2 and 3 you can see that this unique light fixture started its life as (and still is) a candle lantern. Because of the Gothic quatrefoil details this may have been a sanctuary lamp at the entrance of a church or monastery. The beautifully patinated brass is all hand-crafted, but the unique art glass shade with its unique hand-etched, flowery patterns and amazing color is what makes this antique truly special. Have you also noticed the 'stand-alone' etched oak branches with acorns?
