About the Item

This late 19th century Mexican Folk Art devotional painting depicts St. Rita of Casia, the patron saint of lost and improbable causes. Wishing to join an Augustinian convent as a child, St. Rita was instead married against her will at age 12. After the murder of her husband, she wished to join the monastery of Saint Mary Magdalene at Cascia, but was turned away and given the seemingly impossible task of reconciling her family with her husband's murderers. She prayed that her sons would die instead of exacting their revenge and they soon afterwards died of natural causes. She entered the convent at age 36. St. Rita is often depicted holding a skull, with a wound in her forehead and with two children. The two children bring to mind the sacrifice of her two sons. It is said that while in the convent, immediately after expressing her desire to suffer as Jesus had, a thorn from a crucifix fell and wounded her forehead.
