About the Item

19th century pocket sundial compass pantochronometer. English. Circa 1870. Combining a floating magnetic compass, a pivoting horizontal sundial with angled brass gnomon, and a universal time dial, all set beneath a low domed glass, and framed by a broad enamelled outer ring listing world cities and countries. Housed in a turned sycamore polished case with the lidded top fitting very well. The compass finds north accurately. The domed glass is clear and the sycamore case is sound with light age related marks. The original verso instructions showing some signs of use. A Victorian multi‑function scientific novelty used to tell solar time or compare local time with global locations by aligning the compass and adjusting the gnomon to the sun. A very good example of this scarce pantochronometer, combining compass, sundial and universal time dial in one compact instrument, and a notably desirable collector’s piece.
