About the Item

Antique Tribal Sofreh, Circa 1900, 3'10" x 3'3", Camel and Red Field, Zigzag Border, Wool Rug Kilim, Wall-Hanging, Accent Rug, Southwest Style, Navajo (Diné) Style Origin: Tribal, west Asia Circa: 1900 (est.) Type: Sofreh (dining textile/flatweave), tribal kilim Materials: Wool, naturally dyed Dimensions: 3'10" x 3'3" (117 x 99 cm, or 46 x 39 inches) Condition: Good. Slight unevenness at sides. This antique tribal sofreh measures 3'10" x 3'3" (117 x 99 cm, or 46 x 39 inches), woven circa 1900 in vegetable-dyed wool. The composition is bold and direct: the field is divided horizontally into two distinct sections: a warm, camel upper portion and a deep, brick red lower ground. At center is a single small stepped star medallion outlined in brilliant white cotton. All four sides are framed by a wide, boldly drawn zigzag border in deep navy and bright red, producing a strong graphic composition. The natural dyes retain considerable depth and saturation for a piece of this age. It is a highly decorative tribal weaving suited to floor use, display as a wall-hanging, use as a table covering, or for the traditional haft-seen. Sofrehs are eccentric and personal household artifacts that served as the focal points of mealtime gatherings in tribal and nomadic communities. They are often colorful and direct in design. Their modest, near-square size makes them excellent accent rugs, particularly in kitchens and dining areas, and they are equally effective as wall-hangings or spread beneath the haft-seen table at Nowruz. Condition and Use The rug is in good condition. Slight unevenness is present at the sides, consistent with age and hand-weaving. It is suited for use as a small accent rug, a wall-hanging, or a table covering.
