This early 20th century East Turkestan Khotan large gallery carpet presents a richly ornamented composition anchored by a vertically oriented field filled with symbolic and geometric devices. At the center, a sequence of medallion-like forms some enclosing stylized mask or face motifs are aligned along the vertical axis, interspersed with crosses, rosettes, and abstract emblems that create a dense yet balanced arrangement. The ivory-toned field is animated by a wide range of motifs, including branching forms, circular medallions, and small talismanic elements, all rendered with a crisp, graphic quality. This intricate interior is framed by a striking inner border of bold diagonal striping in alternating dark and light tones, providing a strong visual transition to the outer bands. The main borders are vivid and expressive, dominated by saturated red grounds populated with stylized rosettes, crosses, and angular floral motifs.
