A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This early 20th century East Turkestan Khotan long and narrow carpet presents a vertically oriented composition centered on a soft gray-blue field filled with an array of symbolic and geometric devices. Along the central axis, a sequence of medallions ranging from round rosettes to more angular, stepped forms anchors the design, while smaller motifs including crosses, stylized blossoms, and abstract emblems are symmetrically arranged around them. The field is enclosed by a crisp inner border featuring a continuous fretwork meander, lending definition and structure to the composition. Beyond this, a striking series of borders introduces greater visual energy, including bands of diagonal striping, rosettes, and angular floral elements. The main borders are populated with alternating motifs crosses, blossoms, and geometric devices creating a rhythmic progression that complements the intricacy of the field. The palette is balanced and nuanced, combining cool gray-blue tones with warm accents of coral, rust, and soft ivory, along with touches of muted green and pale yellow. This interplay of color enhances the clarity of the design while maintaining the refined restraint typical of Khotan weaving.
