About the Item

A wool pile of asymmetric knots on a cotton foundation. This mid-20th century East Turkestan Khotan carpet presents a bold and balanced composition set on a saturated red field, organized around a vertical axis of stylized branching “tree” motifs. These central elements, composed of small rosettes and linked nodes, rise symmetrically through the field, flanked by an orderly arrangement of round medallions, star forms, and geometric floral devices. The design combines structured geometry with delicate ornament, as the circular medallions and smaller motifs are evenly spaced, creating a harmonious and measured rhythm. Subtle Chinese influence is evident in the stylization of the blossoms, the symmetry of the layout, and the presence of auspicious emblem-like forms. A crisp inner border of Greek key meanders frames the field, followed by a broader band in soft taupe tones that provides visual contrast to the vivid center. The outer borders introduce more animated movement, with angular vine scrolls and multicolored geometric elements that enliven the perimeter and anchor the composition. The palette is rich and expressive, dominated by strong red tones with accents of saffron, ivory, pale blue, and muted green.
