About the Item

A finely handwoven Navajo rug featuring a bold geometric hourglass design, created in the early 20th century using hand-spun wool in natural undyed tones of brown and grey, accented by faded aniline red. Likely woven in the Crystal or Red Mesa region, this piece reflects the transitional phase between traditional blanket weaving and the decorative trading-post rugs of the 1920s–1940s. Its minimalist, symmetrical composition and warm earthy palette make it a timeless example of Navajo textile art. This rug remains in very good condition with only minor age-appropriate wear. Suitable for use as a wall hanging or floor accent in both Southwestern and modern interiors. Origin: Navajo Nation, Southwestern USA Date: Circa 1920–1940 Technique: Handwoven wool on wool, flat-weave construction Condition: Very good vintage condition; minor wear consistent with age Provenance: Acquired in Colorado Springs, USA Styling Notes This authentic Navajo rug’s restrained palette and symmetrical geometry lend harmony to both modern minimalist and rustic bohemian interiors. Whether hung on a wall, layered with other textiles, or displayed under a console, it offers warmth, authenticity, and a quiet strength rooted in Indigenous craftsmanship. Vintage Navajo Rug, Handwoven Wool, Chinle Revival Design, 1920s

Vintage Navajo Rug, Handwoven Wool, Chinle Revival Design, 1920s

Located in Barrington, IL

This vintage Navajo rug features a beautifully executed Chinle Revival pattern.  Handwoven from native hand-spun wool, this rug exemplifies the elegance and cultural depth of Southwestern textile traditions. The design follows a classic banded Chinle layout, a regional design style that originated in the 1920s in Chinle, Arizona, near the sacred Canyon de Chelly.   The rug design has alternating horizontal stripes in earth-toned hues of cornmeal yellow, soft cream, warm brown, black, gray, and ivory. The repeating geometric motifs are rich with symbolic meaning, reflecting the weaver’s deep connection to the land, heritage, and spirituality. Executed with a flat weave construction, this piece is crafted from wool on a typical cotton foundation, showcasing both strength and subtle refinement. The use of natural organic dyes, sourced from local plants and minerals, lends the rug a muted, harmonious color palette that feels at once grounded and timeless. Dimensions: 36” x 60” Date of Manufacture: 1st Quarter of the 1900s Place of Origin: Southwest, United States Material: Wool pile on a cotton foundation with vegetable dyes Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU: 2047 Chinle Revival Rugs, Chinle Navajo, Chinle Rugs...
