About the Item

A fine antique tribal flat weave, originating from the Kurdish tribal enclaves located around Sivas, in northeastern Anatolia. Repurposed from a mafrash, which is a woven bag used to store the bedding material inside the tent, it displays the mastery of two type of flat weave techniques. The top and bottom section consists of horizontal bands in contrasting colours woven in the weft-faced technique, which is commonly known as kilim. The central portion of the composition is entirely woven in the reverse weft wrapping technique, also known as sumak, and displays an horizontal row of large hexagonal motifs alternated by offset rows of geometric elements connected to the cult of fertility. The colours are entirely from natural sources, including an abundant use of insect dye such as cochineal. A truly authentic work of tribal woven art, wihch can be used either as a beautiful hanging on the wall or as a scatter rug on the floor.
