Checkerboard Kurdish Wool Kilim, Eastern Turkey, Undyed Earth-Toned Camel and Ivory Rug, c. 2000 Origin: Kurdish borderlands, eastern Turkey Circa: Circa 2000 Type: Kilim (flatweave), checkerboard pattern, contemporary aesthetic with traditional Turkish rug-weaving Materials: Wool, undyed and naturally earth-toned Dimensions: 3'11" x 6'4" (119 x 193 cm, or 47 x 76 inches) Condition: Excellent Checkerboard kilim measuring 3'11" x 6'4" (119 x 193 cm, or 47 x 76 inches), woven in eastern Turkey circa 2000 in undyed earth-toned wool. The warm camel and with soft ivory palette derives entirely from the natural color variations of the hand-spun wool, without the use of dyes. Extremely dense in hand and sturdy underfoot, the rug has a neutral, tone-on-tone overall design that suits contemporary and minimalist interiors. The checkerboard squares are freely drawn, with subtly irregular edges that give the composition an organic quality distinguishing this kilim from commercially produced flatweaves. The blocks are connected with interlocking dovetail joins that shift across warps as the weaver worked from row to row, blending the blocks together at their boundaries. Dense, high-quality wool and precise weaving give the rug a robustness rarely seen in newly produced kilims. The rug hails from the Kurdish borderlands of eastern Turkey, adjacent to western Armenia and northwestern Iran, where village weaving has long prioritized sturdy kilims built to sustain decades of hard use.
