About the Item

This fine chair made during the reign of Louis Philippe circa 1870 was created from mahogany, bronze and steel. Designed to be a marvel of engineering this chair was a costly and stylish device used by only the most elevated person, the chair is self-propelled and directed with crank handles that drive internal gears causing the large bronze banded mahogany wheels to rotate. As well the chair has a built-in hidden chaise and footrest which can be extended See figure 9, removable wings for comfort and a reclining system allowing the sitter to relax in any number of positions. The cabinet makers and manufacturer's gilded bronze label is affected to the internal footrest portion and gives the name and street address in Paris see figure 10. Upholstered recently the material is cotton and in good shape and the mechanical devices which make this chair a marvel all work and are intact.
