About the Item

A pair of exceptionally generous armchairs executed in France circa 1935 in the manner of André Groult, presenting wide curved backs and armrests entirely upholstered in modern lambswool, resting on godronné toupie legs in walnut. The enveloping form, the softness of the textile, and the sensual curvature of the silhouette place these pieces within the aesthetic current that Groult embodied, one where comfort becomes a formal ambition and where the generosity of the upholstered volume is as deliberate as any sculptural decision. The furniture of mid-1930s France was marked by a taste for enveloping forms, generous volumes, and an emphatic sense of physical comfort, and these armchairs are a strong expression of that moment. The godronné walnut legs introduce a note of precision and craft that anchors the softness of the upholstered form. The lambswool upholstery is modern. The pieces are in good condition overall.
