About the Item

A striking pair of Brazilian Modern armchairs by JD Móveis, dating to the 1960s, distinguished by their sculptural rosewood construction, generous proportions, and exceptionally inviting upholstered form. The design balances the architectural strength of Brazilian hardwood with the softness and warmth of richly textured upholstery, resulting in seating that feels substantial yet remarkably comfortable. The armchairs are framed by broad, beautifully figured Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá) side panels, with dramatic grain patterns flowing across the arms, apron, and structural elements. Deep chocolate and reddish-brown tones are animated by expressive natural veining, giving each chair an individual character while preserving the visual unity of the pair. The wood retains a refined satin finish that allows the extraordinary grain and tonal variation of the rosewood to remain the defining decorative element. The upholstery is executed in a warm ivory velvet with a subtle tonal pattern, introducing texture and quiet luminosity against the depth of the jacarandá. Its soft cream, champagne, and pale blush undertones respond beautifully to light, while the delicate woven pattern gives the fabric greater visual depth than a conventional solid velvet. The result is sophisticated and tactile without competing with the richness of the wood. Comfort is integral to the design. Generously padded seat and back cushions create a deep, enveloping sitting experience, while softly rounded upholstered armrests extend over the rigid rosewood shell, tempering its architectural geometry. Restrained button tufting across the backrest adds dimension and a subtle rhythm, emphasizing the plushness of the upholstery while maintaining the chair’s clean Modernist profile. The combination of broad proportions, substantial cushioning, and gently relaxed upholstery makes the pair exceptionally comfortable and inviting. Raised on distinctive sculptural rosewood feet, the chairs retain a sense of lightness despite their commanding proportions. The contrast between the highly expressive wood grain, warm textured velvet, and softly upholstered volumes captures a defining quality of Brazilian Modern design: an ability to unite exceptional natural materials, rigorous construction, and genuine comfort. An expressive and highly usable pair of 1960s Brazilian Modern armchairs, equally compelling as functional seating and as sculptural objects within a sophisticated contemporary or collected interior.
