About the Item

An exceptional pair of Brazilian Modern armchairs by Bertomeu, showcasing the bold sculptural language and refined craftsmanship that defined Brazil’s most celebrated furniture makers during the mid-20th century. Designed with commanding architectural presence, the chairs feature substantial square frames crafted from richly figured Brazilian rosewood (jacarandá), whose dramatic grain patterns create a striking visual contrast against the soft upholstery. The generously proportioned seats, backrests, and arms have been newly upholstered in luxurious mohair velvet, selected for its exceptional durability, soft hand, and subtle directional sheen. The upholstery enhances the chairs’ inviting silhouette while remaining faithful to the sophisticated character of the original design. Deep button tufting on the backrest and arms creates sculptural volume and visual depth, balancing comfort with a distinctly modern aesthetic. The most remarkable design element is found at the rear of each chair. The backs feature six sculpted vertical rosewood slats suspended within the frame and connected by a solid brass rod, creating an elegant architectural composition that is as striking from behind as it is from the front. This inventive structural detail exemplifies the Brazilian Modern movement’s ability to merge craftsmanship, engineering, and sculptural form into a single cohesive design. Viewed from any angle, the chairs reveal an extraordinary interplay of materials—warm jacarandá rosewood, polished brass, and sumptuous mohair—resulting in a timeless design that feels both substantial and refined. Their strong geometric framework, generous proportions, and iconic rear elevation make them ideal as focal points in a living room, library, office, or collector’s interior. A rare and highly decorative pair that embodies the elegance, innovation, and craftsmanship of Brazilian Modern furniture at its finest.
