About the Item

Listed is a unique set of two model no. 416 armchairs, designed by Wim Rietveld (son of Gerrit Rietveld) and Andre Cordemeyer in 1957. It was the first Dutch polyester armchair ever made out of one piece of molded polyester, reinforced with glass fibers. The polyester seat is supported by a tubular solid metal frame with rubber shock mounts. In the days, this experimental chair was produced in limited numbers by Gispen Culemborg, and today extremely hard to find. The listed model no. 416 armchairs are in magnificently original condition. The grey colour is original, with visible fibers. All screws, shock mounts and rubber floor caps are original — as is the upholstery, an extremely rare feature to be seen on these chairs, adding comfort and turning it in a true object of use. A unique chance to own a piece of Dutch design history, and a lovely insight in how upholstery on the experimental forms of mid-century furniture took place. Both chairs are evenly used, the upholstery has obviously seen better days but it is still adequate. However, it would be ridiculous to mess about with the originality of this lovely set.
