About the Item

An aesthetic movement chair By Lamb of Manchester designed by W.J. Estall Of unique elegance and design, the black ebonised chair fashioned in the Aesthetic manner featuring carved details along the seat rail, crest rail, and the refined upright stiles. Stamped by the maker 'Lamb / Manchester.' circa 1875 Published in 'British Furniture 1820 to 1920' by Christopher Payne, 2023, p. 371, illustrated fig. 7.75 showing the present chair. A nearly identical chair was owned and used by the famous psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, as seen in the additional images of his office which can be visited today in Hampstead, London. A 19th century photograph shows an identical chair in the London home of the famous actress Edith Woodwirth. Beyond her work on the stage, Woodwirth was an influential producer and manager of theaters, including the famed Shakespeare Globe; she was also a philanthropist backed by her husband's wealth.
