Midcentury Brown Fabric and Chrome Steel Chaise Longue, Paul Tuttle Style, 1980s
Midcentury Brown Fabric and Chrome Steel Chaise Longue, Paul Tuttle Style, 1980s

Midcentury Brown Fabric and Chrome Steel Chaise Longue, Paul Tuttle Style, 1980s

By Paul Tuttle

Located in Roma, IT

Amazing midcentury brown fabric and chromed steel chaise longue. This wonderful daybed is attributed to the American designer Paul Tuttle and was produced during the 1980s. This item is wonderful because of the structure of the chair, made of chromed steel and the tobacco brown fabric cover, made in one piece and adhering on the structure. The cover can be unsheathed from the back. The piece is incredibly elegant because of the structure and will smarten a living room or a midcentury studio. Paul Tuttle started out working in the studio of designer Alvin Lustig in Los Angeles. He soon received the Frank Lloyd Wright Taliesin West Fellowship, an apprenticeship program with mentorship from Wright himself. Tuttle moved to Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, and impressed Wright during his short stay of four months. Tuttle then moved back to Los Angeles and worked on furniture building by himself awhile, before serving as an apprentice to architecture firms Welton Becket & Associates and Thornton Ladd & Associates. As an apprentice, Tuttle worked on interior design. In 1956, Tuttle moved to Santa Barbara where he met Hans Grether, owner of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Doestch, Grether & Cie. Grether hired Tuttle as a design consultant shortly thereafter. In 1966 Tuttle gave a solo exhibition at the Pasadena Art Museum, cementing his position as a leading American designer. He also won the first ever Carson Pirie Scott Young Designer Award for the popular "Z" Chair in 1966. The design for the "Z" Chair, originally known as the "Rocket Launcher" would become Tuttle's most well known work. Tuttle was hired by Strassle in 1967 as a designer, and subsequently spent half his time abroad in Switzerland until he left the position in 1983. In 1978, Tuttle's work was featured in a solo exhibit called "Paul Tuttle, Designer" at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. After leaving his designer position at Strassle, Tuttle continued at Strassle on a royalty only...

While maintaining its soft polyurethane soul – a material which has always characterized Gufram products – PRATONE® FOREVER changes its “skin”: originally covered in Guflac®, the special paint invented and patented by the company to coat its creations in polyurethane while still maintaining their softness and elasticity, this special edition is covered in an elastic wool bouclé fabric that adheres perfectly to the eccentric forms of this out of the ordinary chair, ensuring excellent resistance to wear and tear. Please note: this piece is on exhibition only at the 1stdibs Gallery. Purchased pieces will be shipped directly from our production site in Italy. Production lead times are often flexible and stock levels vary. Materials: Settee in soft polyurethane upholstered with bouclé wool. Variations: We have 3 colour variations of our Pratone Forever...

Vintage, New and Antique Chaise Longues

Sit back, relax and get all of the ergonomic support you could ever need by introducing an alluring antique or vintage chaise longue in your living room or by your outdoor fire pit.

The chaise longue is an upholstered piece of furniture that was made popular in France in the early 16th century. This low reclining seat — a “long chair” in English — boasts an elongated form and low back that extends about half the length of the furnishing, affording the welcome opportunity for a sitter to put their feet up and relax. A comfortable common ground between sofas and daybeds, early iterations of chaise longues were discovered in Ancient Egypt and were later frequently used in both Greece and Rome.

In the late 1700s, the first chaise longues were imported to America, and English speakers have struggled with the name ever since. (In the United States, the term is frequently spelled “chaise lounge.”) So, how do you pronounce chaise longue? It sounds like “shayz lawng,” but limiting it to shayz is perfectly acceptable in the States.

Antique Victorian chaise longues and 19th-century chaise longues bring luxury and perhaps extravagance to your living space while mid-century modern chaise longues, designed by the likes of Adrian Pearsall, Vladimir Kagan or Milo Baughman, can alter an interior with dazzling geometric contours and richly varied textures.

On 1stDibs, find many kinds of chaise longues for your home — from sculptural works by Charlotte Perriand to plush and velvety Louis XVI pieces to minimalist contemporary versions to suit your understated decor.
