About the Item

Swedish workshop, set of four dining chairs, pine and rush, Sweden, 1940s. The back splat of each chair is carved in an open pierced motif, a detail rooted in Scandinavian folk craft traditions that persisted in regional Swedish furniture-making well into the mid-century. Solid pine frames with turned front posts and a traditional multi-rail back construction reflect the honest workshop approach characteristic of Swedish rural furniture from this period. Rush seats are tightly woven and in sound condition, retaining their flexibility and woven pattern. The pine has developed a warm, golden-honey tone consistent with decades of domestic use. Sets of four matching Scandinavian pine chairs with intact rush work are increasingly sought by collectors drawn to the authentic craft tradition of Nordic regional workshops. These chairs work equally well in a Scandinavian country interior or as an eclectic counterpoint in a contemporary dining room. Good condition throughout; minor wear consistent with age and use.
