About the Item

Swedish workshop, set of six dining chairs, oak, 1950s. The backs stand unusually tall, the rear uprights carried well above the top rail and finished with turned baluster finials. Each crest rail is arched and cut through with a row of three lobed circles, an openwork band that lifts the whole back and repeats identically across the six. Two solid horizontal rails sit below, giving the ladder back its rhythm. The seats are hand woven in rush, laid in four triangular fans, and the seat rails are scalloped on all three visible sides so the shaping of the crest carries down into the frame. Front legs are square in section and lightly tapered, joined by low stretchers in an H arrangement. The oak is pale and unstained throughout with the grain reading openly. Rush seated oak ladder backs of this kind came out of Scandinavian workshops right through the middle of the century, made in sets for farmhouse and country dining. Condition is good, with wear consistent with age and use.

    Wear consistent with age and use. Set of six, all matching. Solid oak frames sound and tight on their pegged joints, chairs sit level. Rush seats intact on all six with light surface wear and minor fraying at the front edges. Pale unstained oak with small knocks to the legs.
