About the Item

Designed by renowned Brazilian designer Jean Gillon during the 1970s, this rare low back lounge chair is an outstanding example of Brazilian Modern design. Combining sculptural proportions, exceptional comfort, and honest construction, it reflects Gillon's signature approach of pairing luxurious natural materials with practical engineering. The chair features a Brazilian imbuia frame with rich dark tones and beautifully figured grain. Its clean architectural lines are softened by generous leather cushions, while the suspended seat is supported by original suede leather slings, creating the relaxed comfort that became a hallmark of Brazilian Modern furniture. This example remains completely original, retaining its original tan leather upholstery, suede suspension straps, and manufacturer's stamp beneath the frame. Pegged joinery allows the chair to be dismantled for more economical long-distance shipping, demonstrating the thoughtful engineering behind the design. The pieces are also available for purchase individually for $4,500 each. We currently have a matching pair available, as well as the original three-seat sofa from the same Jean Gillon collection, allowing you to create a cohesive and highly collectible seating group. The chair is in very good original vintage condition. The hardwood frame has been well preserved with a beautiful natural patina. The leather remains supple and attractive, showing only light age-appropriate wear. There are a few light cat scratches beneath the front edge of the seat cushion, along with minor wear hidden underneath the cushion, neither of which detracts from the chair's overall presentation. Jean Gillon played a significant role in establishing Brazilian Modern furniture internationally, creating designs that balanced sculptural elegance with exceptional everyday comfort. Today, original examples remain highly sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship, distinctive character, and timeless appeal.
