About the Item

Designed by renowned Brazilian designer Jean Gillon during the 1970s, this rare three-seat sofa is an outstanding example of Brazilian Modern design. Combining sculptural proportions, exceptional comfort, and honest construction, it reflects Gillon's signature approach of pairing luxurious natural materials with practical engineering. The sofa features a Brazilian Imbuia frame with rich dark tones and beautifully figured grain. The bold architectural structure is softened by generous tufted leather cushions, while the seat is supported by original suede leather slings that create the relaxed comfort characteristic of Jean Gillon's finest seating designs. Sculptural arm supports and exposed pegged joinery further emphasize the craftsmanship and structural honesty that define the piece. This example remains completely original, retaining its original tan leather upholstery, suede suspension straps, and manufacturer's stamp beneath the frame. Pegged construction allows the sofa to be dismantled into major components, making long-distance transportation significantly more practical than many comparable vintage sofas. The sofa is in very good original vintage condition. The hardwood frame has been beautifully preserved with a rich natural patina. The original leather shows attractive age-related character while remaining supple and comfortable. There are light signs of use consistent with age, adding authenticity without detracting from the overall presentation. We also have the matching lounge chairs from the same Jean Gillon collection available in separate listings, offering the opportunity to assemble a complete and highly collectible Brazilian Modern seating group. Jean Gillon played a significant role in establishing Brazilian Modern furniture internationally, creating designs that balanced sculptural elegance with exceptional everyday comfort. Today, original examples remain highly sought after by collectors for their craftsmanship, distinctive character, and timeless appeal. 1970s MP-91 / MP-163 Earth Sofa by Percival Lafer in leather and hardwood

By Percival Lafer

Located in Victoria, BC

Designed by Percival Lafer during the 1970s, the MP-91 / MP-163 “Earth” sofa remains one of the most recognizable and comfortable seating designs produced during the golden era of Brazilian modernism. The design combines structural clarity with an unusually relaxed and immersive seating experience, reflecting Lafer’s unique ability to merge engineering, ergonomics, and material expression. The sofa is constructed around a robust Brazilian hardwood frame that creates a suspended visual effect, where the upholstered body appears to float lightly above the base structure. The proportions are low and architectural, while the generous cushioning and suspended support system create a remarkably comfortable sit. Lafer approached seating with a strong emphasis on long-term comfort and practical construction, qualities that became central to his international success during the 1970s export period. This example has been fully reupholstered in high-quality Spinneybeck leather, a material widely recognized for its durability and refined surface quality. The arm cushions feature an uncommon pillow configuration. While this may represent a later upholstery interpretation introduced during restoration, similar variations were also seen in certain export-market configurations produced through Brazil Contempo...
