About the Item

Designed by Percival Lafer during the 1970s, the MP-81 lounge chair is one of the most recognizable expressions of Brazilian modern design. This example is accompanied by its matching ottoman and retains its original dark brown leather upholstery, paired with the exposed Brazilian jatobá structure characteristic of the model. The MP-81 is built around a deeply cushioned upholstered body suspended within an expressive hardwood frame. Generous volumes of leather form the seat, back, and arms, with pronounced tufting creating the soft, enveloping character for which Lafer’s seating is celebrated. A cylindrical headrest extends across the upper back, completing the chair’s distinctive profile and providing additional support without interrupting the openness of the structure. The exposed jatobá supports rise along the sides of the chair, functioning simultaneously as legs, structural anchors, and visual elements. Dense and richly toned, the Brazilian hardwood provides a strong counterpoint to the softness of the upholstery. Lafer leaves this relationship deliberately visible, allowing the construction itself to become part of the composition. The matching ottoman carries the same vocabulary on a smaller scale, combining a generously tufted leather cushion with exposed jatobá supports. Together, the two pieces create a particularly complete expression of the MP-81 design and its emphasis on relaxed, informal comfort. Both pieces retain their original dark brown leather, which remains in excellent vintage condition with a rich, naturally developed surface and light wear consistent with age and use. The leather shows attractive tonal variation and patina while remaining supple and well preserved. The jatobá frames are solid and stable, retaining their warm reddish-brown tone and expressive grain. A beautifully preserved and complete example of Percival Lafer’s approach to Brazilian modernism, balancing generous comfort, exposed construction, and the contrasting qualities of leather and hardwood. 1970s MP-91 / MP-163 Earth Sofa by Percival Lafer in leather and hardwood

Designed by Percival Lafer during the 1970s, the MP-91 / MP-163 “Earth” sofa remains one of the most recognizable and comfortable seating designs produced during the golden era of Brazilian modernism. The design combines structural clarity with an unusually relaxed and immersive seating experience, reflecting Lafer’s unique ability to merge engineering, ergonomics, and material expression. The sofa is constructed around a robust Brazilian hardwood frame that creates a suspended visual effect, where the upholstered body appears to float lightly above the base structure. The proportions are low and architectural, while the generous cushioning and suspended support system create a remarkably comfortable sit. Lafer approached seating with a strong emphasis on long-term comfort and practical construction, qualities that became central to his international success during the 1970s export period. This example has been fully reupholstered in high-quality Spinneybeck leather, a material widely recognized for its durability and refined surface quality. The arm cushions feature an uncommon pillow configuration. While this may represent a later upholstery interpretation introduced during restoration, similar variations were also seen in certain export-market configurations produced through Brazil Contempo...
