About the Item

As with the UK and much of Europe, something of a design renaissance took place in 1950s France due to developments in materials and technology after the war. French designers were often also architects, whose focus on functionality and quality resulted in sculptural models, such as this pair of chairs. The craftsmanship of this pair is confident yet discreet, visible in the clean junctions and honest detailing of the joinery. Upholstered in off-white ponyskin, the chairs gain their quiet luxury through material rather than embellishment. The hide’s softness and natural irregularities lend warmth to the geometry of the frame, while its muted tone enhances the overall sense of comfort. Together, the wood and hide establish a dialogue between texture and form: one smooth, one tactile, both grounded in natural beauty.
