About the Item

These side chairs originate from Europe in the 1960s, a period defined by a renewed appreciation for natural materials, functional craftsmanship, and honest construction. Mid-century European design moved away from excess ornamentation in favour of clarity, comfort, and durability. Oak furniture from this era reflects a balance between modernist restraint and timeless handcraft, highlighting structure and material. This pair is crafted from solid wood, featuring softly rounded frames with gently curved arms and ladder-style backrests that emphasize both strength and comfort, while also showcasing gently carved contours. The warm tone of the wood highlights the natural grain, adding visual depth and character to the clean, architectural structure. The proportions are generous, offering an embracing seat. The slightly splayed legs and cross-stretchers provide stability. Moreover, the seats are upholstered in rich sheepskin, introducing a contrasting texture that softens the overall design and enhances comfort. The use of this material aligns the chairs with the decade’s interest in warmth, tactility, and elegance. The organic surface of the hide adds subtle textural and visual variation, making the pair feel like a focal point of any space. Together, the sturdy oak construction and plush upholstery create a pleasing dialogue between structure and softness. With their combination of durable and inviting materials, these side chairs embody the relaxed refinement of European mid-century design. They function effortlessly as statement pieces while remaining practical for everyday use. Timeless in form and character, the pair offers an expression of 1960s craftsmanship that fits effortlessly into both modern and classic interiors. Condition: In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The chairs have recently been reconditioned. Due to the nature and age of the wood, the chairs may have some marks, scratches, and discolouration. The seats have recently been reupholstered in premium sheepskin. Each of our items can be reupholstered by our in-house atelier in a fabric of choice. Please reach out for more information. Pair of Wooden Armchairs with Upholstered Cushions, Europe 20th Century

Pair of Wooden Armchairs with Upholstered Cushions, Europe 20th Century

Located in Utrecht, NL

With wedge and hammer, the chair-maker slowly creates shorter pieces to be worked into the seat, spindle, crest rail, and legs. This pair of wooden armchairs stands as a proud example of traditional design practice; their solid nail-free joints highlight the skill and artistry of its makers. This construction method enhances the armchairs’ structure and presents the reverence it deserves. This set borrows from great past examples, such as the Windsor chair or - more broadly - the spindle models widely used throughout Europe during the 20th century. These elements render this specific design truly timeless. They are among the most recognisable models of mid-century chairs in Europe. The spindle chairs are a ubiquitous classic that does just as well in the living room, dining room or even the hall, drawing every eye to it. The proportions are well-thought-out, and the see-through design adds a simple and airy touch. Each chair of this set has fifteen symmetrically arranged wooden slim spindles that form the back and armrests. A continuous arm and bow-back frame the slim spindles, offering a seamless joint from the seat and the back. The legs splay outward and run into the seat, which is a single wood piece slightly inclined to assist a more comfortable seating experience combined with the custom-made cushion upholstered in premium bouclé fabric. This model’s design is a classic that goes beyond trends, a product of a deep-rooted desire to showcase impeccable craftsmanship and a stylish aesthetic without compromising the quality of production or materials. This spindle chair set...
