BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

The collection is composed by outdoor net, batyline or plastic, in a portion leaving room to a more soft design approach that is harmonious, this elements are combined to a structure made of wood and metal that transcends to tech and soft, a paradigm of past, present and future that invite all the viewers to contemplate and reflect in this philosophical matters in a tactile and visual way. Resulting is a essential and timeless set of objects designed for the modern lifestyle that permit infinite compositions indoors or outdoors that will participate in lives for a lifetime like a breeze full of “zen” elements and energy. Designed by Carlo Hauner and Martin Eisler, modern Brazilian sofa, iron, and velvet. Brazil, circa 1950s. Shell or "Concha" sofa is made of iron and recently reupholstered in yellow velvet by the experienced craftsmen in our team. The upholstery was chosen considering the contemporary proposal of the piece. The sofa features a comfortable seat, clean design, and freedom of user movements and is constructed in a frame with metal rods elegantly positioned to give strength to the piece, a common trait of designers. The buttons velvet coated between seat and backs were used, by the designers, for an excellent velvet finish, and the restoration proposal was to maintain them. Martin Eisler and Carlo Hauner were the primary designers for the iconic Brazilian furniture...

Giuseppe Scapinelli Sculptural Sofa in Solid Caviúna & Evergreen Mohair

By Giuseppe Scapinelli

Located in New York, NY

A striking expression of Brazilian mid-century modernism, this sculptural sofa by Giuseppe Scapinelli embodies the designer's unmistakable ability to unite architectural precision with sensual organic form. Distinguished by its elegantly inclined backrest, fluid open arms, and gracefully tapered legs, the composition possesses an extraordinary sense of visual lightness while maintaining exceptional structural integrity. Every line has been carefully resolved, creating a silhouette that appears effortless from every angle—an enduring hallmark of Scapinelli's most celebrated seating designs produced during the golden age of Brazilian design in the 1950s. Expertly crafted from solid caviúna, one of Brazil's most prized exotic hardwoods, the frame showcases remarkable craftsmanship and sculptural refinement. The timber displays rich honey-caramel brown tones layered with deep reddish undertones and dramatic dark grain movement that flows continuously throughout the arms and legs, emphasizing the sofa's sculptural geometry. Finished in a refined satin-matte surface, the wood retains its authentic character while revealing the exceptional quality of the joinery and hand-finishing. The result is warm, dimensional, and unmistakably Brazilian—qualities that have made caviúna among the most desirable materials found in important mid-century furniture. The sofa has been newly upholstered in Found Collectibles...
