About the Item

Angular and elemental, this French carpenter’s bench speaks in the quiet dialect of agrarian utility. Its silhouette—low, tapered, and architectural—evokes the austerity of a rural outbuilding, composed entirely of oak worn by decades of touch and toil. The joinery is vernacular, held in place not by metal fasteners but by the integrity of wooden wedges and gravity-bound craft. Attributed to a provincial workshop in the tradition of French rural carpentry. Dating to the early 20th century, the bench reflects the functional ingenuity of the countryside, where every object was both tool and testament. Its A-frame legs are braced for stability, while the angled notches and pegs at each end suggest its original purpose as a workbench or saw trestle—designed for enduring physical strain, yet now elevated to sculptural reverence. Fashioned in solid oak, the surface is deeply patinated with age, bearing tool marks, knots, and insect traces—each a glyph in the story of its use. The wood is dry and raw to the touch, left unfinished to preserve the authentic texture and color developed through time and labor. Wear consistent with age and use. Meticulously preserved by Jada to maintain its structural integrity while honoring its original patina. Now liberated from its original context, the bench assumes a new role: as sculpture, console, or low table—an object of presence, its simplicity resonating with the elegance of the essential. Available for private acquisition. Inquiries from discerning collectors are welcome.
