About the Item

Early Tibetan Painted Storage Chest with Stupa Motif Ex-Estate of Gary Shandling-purchased at an auction that was selling off a number of his Asian antiques the year after he sadly passed away. He was well known for his collecting of this type of art, and for being an active practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism. In the documentary that came out about him a few years ago, you can see many of his Buddhist antiques around his home. This exceptional early Tibetan painted storage chest is a powerful and decorative survivor of traditional Himalayan craftsmanship, formerly from the estate of the late comedian and collector Gary Shandling. Constructed from thick, hand-worked wood with early iron fittings, leather elements, and traditional joinery, the chest exemplifies the robust utility and spiritual symbolism characteristic of historic Tibetan furniture. The exterior is richly hand-painted in mineral pigments, centered by a prominent stupa motif, symbolizing enlightenment and protection, surrounded by intricate geometric and floral designs. The visible paint surface appears to be at least 100 years old, while the chest itself is likely several centuries old, as evidenced by its construction methods, wear patterns, and early hardware. Areas of repainting, losses, and repairs are consistent with long devotional and domestic use, contributing to its authentic, timeworn character. Structurally sound and suitable for practical storage (though not for seating), this large chest offers dramatic visual impact in any interior—ideal for collectors of Tibetan art, Buddhist antiques, or statement furniture with provenance. An imposing, soulful piece that commands attention and history in equal measure.
