About the Item

French coffer or chest, storage bench or footbed for queen size bed. Rustic Breton storage bench made of solid oak, dating from the 18th century. This popular piece features a simple, utilitarian design typical of rural Breton furniture. The backrest is formed by two thick, slightly curved side panels, ending in small, very simple carved armrests. The lift-up seat conceals a spacious storage chest, once used for linens, clothing, or everyday items. The front is composed of wide planks weathered by time, highlighting the raw wood’s honey and light brown hues. The scalloped lower rail adds a discreet and traditional decorative touch. This 18th-century piece of furniture has been partially restored: the back has been reinforced by our cabinetmaker to ensure it will stand the test of time, as you can see in the photos. Two small storage compartments are hidden in the armrests. The piece exudes an authentic, minimalist aesthetic, reminiscent of French country furniture and monastic furnishings. The signs of wear, cracks, and irregularities in the wood enhance its antique character and beautiful original patina.
