About the Item

A Sugi Cedar Long Low Cabinet with 8 Drawers from Meiji period, circa 1860s–1900s, constructed from solid Sugi cedar and finished in layers of original urushi lacquer. The low, wide form gives the piece a grounded and practical presence. 8 deep drawers provide substantial storage. Today, it can also be used as a low console, storage chest, or coffee table-like piece in an interior setting. The original surface has developed a deep wabi-sabi character through age and use. Layers of urushi lacquer, persimmon tannin known as kakishibu, and burnt pine soot pigment create a warm, dark tone with a subtle reddish hue, deepening toward matte black with the accumulated patina of time. The piece remains strong enough for practical use. Each drawer opens and closes smoothly.
